Room to Room Transfer with Closet Re-Installation
Problem:
In 2004, Moving Forward helped Mr. and Mrs. E. move from a condo to a large 2-bedroom, 2-bathroom + den apartment in an independent living community. After the move, the resident customized their new home with professional closet inserts for 3 closets and supplemental cabinets in the bathrooms.
By 2009, Mr. and Mrs. E’s needs had changed. Additional physical restrictions and added caretaking duties caused the couple to re-evaluate their current home and thoughtfully decide to move to another apartment, on another floor, within the community. They called Moving Forward for help once more in order to satisfy financial, physical and emotional needs.
Solution:
A week before the new move, Moving Forward sent one of our crew members - who is also a licensed builder - to remove the professional closet inserts and re-install them in the new closets…of different dimensions. They did not fit perfectly, but with planned manipulation of the materials, Moving Forward was able to re-use most of the closet materials to the client’s satisfaction. Moving Forward made the clients’ clothing available during the transition by transferring the clothes on hangers to wardrobe boxes during the re-installation and leaving the wardrobes open and accessible during the week between the installation and the transfer.
Prior to the new move, family members were also able to assist by sorting items for distribution to storage, church sales, relatives, and donation. The family completed the delivery of these excess items, except for those items Moving Forward moved into an on-site storage unit. The on-site storage at this particular community happens to be on the same floor as the apartments so our staff moved the original storage items plus a few new ones to the new floor for easy access for the clients.
On the day of the move, a reserved elevator allowed Moving Forward workers to quickly move everything from one apartment to the other - including large furniture items. We were able to pack items lightly in open bins and file boxes, and wheel them through the halls of the community, saving the clients time as well as box and paper expense. With the permission of the community management and maintenance team, the Moving Forward builder/handyman was also able to complete the removal and re-installation of the small added cupboards from the clients’ prior bathroom, and move them to their new kitchen since the wall space in their new bathrooms was too small. This additional work was accomplished on the same day as the move, further streamlining the move process for the clients. Finally, the Moving Forward crew took photos of the decorative wall hangings and pictures in the apartment before taking them off the walls along with their hooks. With those references and supplies, the family was able to re-hang the pictures the week after the transfer.
By calling Moving Forward, these clients were able to save money, reduce stress and customize their move to suit their needs. They were able to work with a company they already trusted; they removed the need to hire separate companies for various services; and by re-purposing the custom built-ins, they saved additional cost, while having new custom closets that satisfied their needs. Further, their very busy family members were able to help in ways that worked with their personal interests and limited time, while allowing Moving Forward’s multi-talented team to make this move as simple and stress-free as possible.
