Helping
the Client with Medical Complications
Problem:
Mrs.
G., a single lady in her 80's, had lived in her home for over
50 years and both her mother and brother, who had lived with
her at one time, were deceased. Due to advancing age, she
made a decision to move to a senior independent community
where she could have one meal per day provided, meet new people,
give up driving, and have increased security. She had contacted
Moving Forward to do the packing and unpacking at the recommendation
of the facility. She had completed a floor plan in her head,
but not on paper and had only begun to sort through a few
items. The day before the packing was scheduled, she slipped
on the snowy stairs leading from her door while putting out
the garbage, and was transferred to a hospital and then a
nursing home with a fractured pelvis.
Solution:
When
Mrs. G. had completed her recuperation period and was ready
to be transferred out of the nursing home and complete rehabilitation
at home, her financial advisor contacted Moving Forward with
a request to complete the move prior to her transfer so she
could go directly to her new apartment. We met him at the
home after he completed collecting her valuables and important
papers. Using a copy of her new floor plan, and information
given by Mrs. G. over the phone, our crew of six made decisions
on which pieces of furniture to take and which items to pack.
Items were sorted through as they were packed. Furniture was
tagged for the moving company. That evening, we dropped off
the key to the home at the moving company, who picked everything
up the next morning and delivered it to the new apartment.
The same crew of six arrived and directed placement of the
furniture, polishing each piece as it arrived. Everything
was put away in the most functional spot, and dusty china
was hand washed before putting it into the china cabinet.
The bed was made and 3 of the largest pictures were hung.
We made sure everything was beautifully placed, but left room
for wheelchair accessibility throughout the apartment.
Follow
Up:
Mrs.
G., a typically private and sometimes suspicious person, was
so pleased with our work, that she hired us to do follow-up
activities after the move. We returned to assist her with
household tasks while working on improving her independence
and weaning away from the need for services. We encouraged
her to continue her home program exercises from therapy once
insurance discontinued direct treatment. We hung all of her
pictures. Her financial advisor and attorney asked for referrals
to downsizing consultants such as appraisers, auctioneers
and estate sale companies. Mrs. G. and her financial advisor
were extremely pleased with our turn-key services, and our
ready access to a large team of professional, caring staff.
Without the services of Moving Forward, Mrs. G. may have never
been able to resume the level of independence she is now enjoying.
She was certainly saved many phone calls and worries, and
her financial advisor/family friend states that we actually
"helped to save her life."
